How to Actually Raise Humidity (Without Misting Yourself to Death)

If your hygrometer is reading too low for your species, you have several levers to pull, and they are not equally effective. Let's rank them honestly.

1. Fix your substrate

This is the biggest lever and the one people skip. Shallow layers of dry aspen or reptile carpet hold almost no moisture. Switch to a deeper layer—three to four inches—of a moisture-retentive substrate like coconut fiber, cypress mulch, or a bioactive mix. How to Lower Humidity (The Problem Nobody Writes About)

High humidity in a desert species is genuinely dangerous—respiratory infections in bearded dragons are often fatal by the time symptoms are obvious.

Here's how to dry things out:

Increase ventilation. Remove any lid coverings, swap glass tops for screen, and if your room itself is humid, run a dehumidifier in the room rather than fighting the tank alone.
